Welcome to Shop Notes. I suppose
I ought to say first that I’m Paul, the mechanic. And I’m
also the salesperson, fitter, manager, accountant, PR director, and
janitor. You get the idea. And I’ll be writing Shop Notes.
I have been playing with bicycles all my life,
since I was five or six anyway, and even though other pursuits have
distracted me variously through those years, cycling has always been
important to me in my lifestyle. So elegant, so rich, so complex;
cycling has history (Coppi, Major Taylor), it has innovation (small
builders, suspension), it has technology (composites), complexity
(27-speed drivetrains), simplicity (fixed-gears), variety (track-road-town-mountain),
efficiency (incredible speed under human power), difficulty (rutted
singletrack), ease (descending with a tailwind), unpredictability
(weather), practicality (commuting), health, art, craft, skill, beauty,
solitude, friendship, etc. ad. inf...... Every person can find something
satisfying in cycling.

notes : WINTER 2006
Important reminders:
“History teaches that war begins when governments
believe the price of aggression is cheap.”
- Ronald Reagan
“Every gun that is made, every warship launched,
every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger
and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in
arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the
genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way
of life at all in any true sense. Under the clouds of war, it is humanity
hanging on a cross of iron.”
- Dwight
Eisenhower
“Naturally, the common people don’t want
war...but after all it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy,
and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy,
or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatoráship. Voice
or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That
is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and
denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It
works the same in every country.”
- Herman Goering
“To announce that there must be no criticism of
the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not
only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
-
Theodore Roosevelt
“War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance
is Strength.”
- Big Brother (from George Orwell’s
1984)
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment
of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom
of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble,
and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
- Constitution
of the United States, First Amendment
“They that can give up essential liberty to obtain
a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
- Benjamin
Franklin
“During almost fifteen centuries has the legal
establishment of Christianity been on trial? What have been its fruits? More
or less in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy, ignorance and servility
in the laity, in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution.”
-
James Madison (“Father of the Constitution”)
“Blessed are the peacemakers...”
-
Jesus
“Do not let the fact that things are not made for
you, that conditions are not as they should be, stop you. Go
on anyway. Everything
depends on those who go on anyway.”
- Robert Henri
